Nickel Plate Road 765 Medium Roast – Highballing Through History
Nickel Plate Road No. 765 is more than a steam locomotive—it is living steel, thunder, and pride. Born in 1944 at the Lima Locomotive Works, this 2-8-4 “Berkshire”-type powerhouse was one of the finest examples of high-speed freight design on American rails. As part of the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad—better known as the Nickel Plate Road—No. 765 was engineered to deliver speed, strength, and reliability across the Midwest’s bustling freight corridors.
Retired in the 1950s and donated to the city of Fort Wayne in 1963, No. 765 was renumbered as 767 and placed on static display in Lawton Park. But it was not destined for a quiet retirement. In the early 1970s, a group of local rail enthusiasts formed the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society and set out to return the 765 to operation. Against long odds, they succeeded.
By the 1980s, No. 765 was charging across the country once again—this time on fan excursions and public runs that introduced new generations to the drama of mainline steam. From the Appalachian ridges of the New River Gorge to the scenic valleys of southern Ohio, the 765 became a moving monument to American innovation and grit.
After a major overhaul in 2005, No. 765 has remained an icon of preservation. It hauled excursions for Norfolk Southern’s 21st Century Steam program and now headlines the Indiana Rail Experience on the Indiana Northeastern Railroad—still climbing grades, shaking the rails, and thrilling the crowds.
This medium roast coffee is inspired by the unbreakable spirit of Nickel Plate Road 765—smooth, rich, and built to go the distance. Sales from this roast support the ongoing operation and preservation of No. 765 and the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society.
Every cup honors the volunteers, the vision, and the valve gear that keep steam rolling into the 21st century. Fill your mug, raise it high—and ride with history.
