Nickel Plate Road Steam Locomotive No. 765 is a Berkshire-class engine built for the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad. Weighing 404 tons and towering 15 feet high, it was engineered to handle both freight and passenger service at speeds exceeding 70 mph. Today, this historic locomotive is preserved as a working piece of railroad history. Maintained by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society in Indiana, it continues to operate on excursion runs and serves as a testament to mid-20th-century railroading.

"Russian Decapod" cylinder drain and departure.

The St. Louis – San Francisco Railroad ("Frisco") 1630, a 1918 steam locomotive known as a "Russian Decapod," is a highlight of the Illinois Railway Museum. Originally built for export to Russia, it was redirected due to the Bolshevik Revolution and later served the Frisco Railroad and Eagle-Picher Mining until the mid-1960s. Winter Canadian Rockies Journey on The Canadian

Last winter, I took a rail trip through the Canadian Rockies, and I wanted to share what it was like. Starting in Vancouver, I boarded VIA Rail’s The Canadian at Pacific Central Station for an overnight journey through the British Columbia and Alberta… wish I had time for the entire route to Toronto!

Some highlights from my trip:

• I stayed in a private cabin for two, which was cozy and perfect for relaxing. I enjoyed the peaceful moments of laying in my bed and watching the passing scenery.

• The Park Car, at the rear of the train, had incredible dome seating for panoramic views of the mountains, and I spent a lot of time there soaking in the natural winter beauty and talking with fellow travelers.

• Meals in the dining car were freshly prepared, and I loved being able to enjoy great food while watching the snowy landscapes roll by. Breakfast is among my favorites, where I always had a hot tasty coffee on hand.

• Journey to Jasper was spectacular, views of the Athabasca Valley were breathtaking. I continued my trip on to Edmonton, enjoying the changing landscapes along the way.

I was in Chama, NM, filming a TV segment on economic sustainability and rail travel with the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad and Vacations By Rail.

No. 484, a coal-burning steam locomotive, built in 1925 by Baldwin Locomotive Works, is a remarkable piece of living history. The drone footage captures No. 484 in action as it heads back to Chama, NM.

Steam Action in Bosnia!

In Dubrave, Bosnia, the 33-248, one of the last Kriegsloks in regular service, shunts coal for the Tuzla Power Plant—the region's largest. Near Tuzla, five WWII-era German-built steam locomotives (Class DRB 52, JŽ 33) continue to work thanks to the ingenuity of their operators.

Built in 1943 for the Eastern Front, these War Locomotives, running on the very coal they transport, were built for 5 years, yet are still in use 80+ years later.

Love "The Canadian" in Winter

One of my favorite winter journeys by rail is VIA Rail's Canadian. This trip I had time for only a single overnight between Vancouver and Edmonton and was lucky enough to venture into the mountains just after the first major snow of the season---simply wonderful.

VIA Rail Canada's flagship train, travels 2,775 miles between Vancouver to Toronto. The stainless steel train and its iconic domes, park car, sleepers and dining car make for a legendary winter journey.

Summer 2024, The Empress embarked on the Final Spike Steam Tour from Calgary to Mexico City to celebrate the one year anniversary of the merger of Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern.

The Canadian Pacific 2816, often called the "Empress," is an H-1b class 4-6-4 Hudson steam locomotive built by Montreal Locomotive Works in December 1930 for Canadian Pacific Railway. It stands out as the only non-streamlined H1 Hudson preserved.
